Elliott's kidney...an update

AJ and I spent most of our day at Riley Children's Hospital today for testing on Elliott's kidney. He had three different tests to clarify the extent of the hydronephrosis (fluid in the kidney). It was rough...poor little man. The tests included having a urinary catheter placed, being taped to a machine for an hour, and an IV. He was such a trooper. I was proud that I didnt cry watching, but it was REALLY hard.

Anyway, the bad news is that there IS a partial obstruction somewhere in the ureter, which is causing that kidney to drain very slowly and beome enlarged. They call it stage 3 hydronephrosis, stage 4 being the most severe. The good news is that the kidney doesnt show any permanent damage (yet), and is functioning as it should, despite the slow drainage. SO, they dont feel any hurry to do surgery. They suspect he will need surgery in coming months, but for now we can just follow-up in one month and see how it looks then. Once in awhile (about 10% of the time) the problem will resolve on its own as the child grows and no surgery is needed. That would be awesome. If not, he will likely have surgery around 6 months of age, when the risks of anesthesia are less for an infant. We are thankful for this news.
